Rainsville, Alabama

The tornado that ripped through the Rainsville, Alabama area on Wednesday, April 27 rode off the mountain and dropped onto the highway, destroying a high school stadium, a Huddle House, and anything else in its path – trees, homes, and people.

The effects of the tornado are devastating. 43 are dead. 173 injured. 250 are still missing. Relief workers were told to start watching for circling birds to lead them to those still not found.

Citizens of Rainsville (population 4500) live in and around the heavily wooded mountains that roll through the northeastern part of the state. They are in limbo, picking through the scattered remains of their homes, living in semi-permanent lodging, and beginning to clear away debris while looking for basic necessities: food, clothing, soap, cleaning supplies, cookware, linens, and so on.

Reality has sunk in.

What matters now is survival.

It will take servanthood and relationship to be welcomed into this devastated community – people taking time to show how they care.

The relief efforts are beginning small, but steadily increasing.

After six days of braving the elements, excavating lifeless victims, and clearing brush from around roads and homes, relief workers are in desperate need of supplies, manpower, and energy.

Everyday, these brave souls help and serve others. They distribute food and supplies, help clear homes, move toppled trees, and help people find whatever scattered pieces of their lives remain.

This is where Adventures in Missions comes in.

We have local contacts willing to host teams and are working with other organizations ready to send workers.

Partnering with True Adventure Sports, we’re launching mission teams into this hard-hit area immediately.

Ministry will be highly relational, coupled with intense manual labor. Given the impact of this tragedy, we are approaching this situation with a long-term mindset.

This will not be a hit-and-run ministry; real lives will be touched and changed by this effort.

As we move forward with relief plans, we are in a state of constant prayer. We would be honored if you would join us.

We believe that God is able and willing to breathe life back into this place of death through the Body of Christ.
