Ministry Overview
This project is an eight-day mission experience for high school students hosted in the heart of St. Catharines, Ontario.
What you will do:
We will be serving the Niagara Region by participating in light construction projects at different organizations in the area. We will also be serving the elderly, developmentally disabled and
homeless that are living in our region, as well as assisting with community outreach programs.
About this location:
The Niagara Region has a population of 427,421 and is comprised of twelve different cities. It is known for its tourism, among many other things. The biggest tourism “pull” is the entire Niagara Falls area, bringing many of our 12 million visitors each year to the Niagara Region. The main geographical feature of the region is the Niagara Escarpment, running in an east-west direction. The best known portion of the escarpment is where it meets the Niagara River, creating the beautiful Niagara Falls. The region is well know for wine-making due to the fertile land. It is home to some of the best farmland in Canada. Elsewhere in the region, in the vicinity of the escarpment, there are many parks and conservation areas to be explored, many smaller waterfalls to be seen, and many great views to be found. There is a high rate of poverty and homelessness in the Niagara Region. 15% of the adult population and 16% of the children live below the poverty line, much of this stemming from the fact that the working people of the Niagara Region have the lowest average income in all of Ontario.
Food and lodging:
We will be staying in classrooms at our host church. All meals will be provided on site and showers are on site as well.
