Considered one of the top ten family-friendly beaches in the world, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina hosts more than two million tourists a year. Hilton Head offers world-class tennis and golf, cultural events, and boasts many gated communities filled with prominent and wealthy residents.
The island is named after Captain William Hilton, who in 1663 identified it and named “Hilton’s Head” after himself. The island features 12 miles of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean. This island is a beautiful place, rich with lots of history.
Beyond the fairways and tennis courts of Hilton Head Island, poverty paralyzes many of the local people. You will find dilapidated trailer homes of families struggling to make ends meet. Mostly elderly people, the island’s poorest residents need help cleaning up their homes and restoring their hope.
You can impact both rich and poor in Hilton Head.
Ministry:
- Nursing Home Visits: There is a fairly large elderly community, and spending time in nursing homes is one of our favorite ministries. Often times people who live in nursing homes feel lonely, even if they have family, because their family lives too far away or rarely visit. We’ll have one-on-one time with the residents, listening to their stories, and encouraging them in their daily lives.
- Service Projects: Participants will have the chance to help at one of the local non-profits with various service/construction projects. It will range from painting, sweeping, and raking yards to patching holes in a roof, doing repairs and installations.
- Beach Ministry: Because of the location, a big focus is ministry on the beach, reaching out to the locals and visitors. By handing out water bottles and inviting others to play a game of beach volleyball or soccer, you will have a chance to reach out to the kids, teens, and adults.
- Children’s Center: One of the local ministries is working with a great children’s center, where you will have a chance to organize activities and work alongside the other teachers. Some of the activities include reaching out to the kids through games and sports as well.
On Hilton Head Island, you can speak to the nations about the kingdom of God, transform the vacation of the average tourist, and experience God’s love in a whole new way, without ever leaving the beach!
