South Asia

Note : this trip is for women only.

Formerly referred to as Bombay, Mumbai is the most populated city in South Asia and the second most populated city in the world. This is where the story of Slumdog Millionaire is set; it’s a hustling and bustling center of culture and commerce.

Unfortunately, amidst the affluence and history of the skyscrapers of Nariman Point, the 5-star Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, the Gateway of South Asia, and the studio lots of Bollywood, are slums and the red light district. In Mumbai, as in other parts of South Asia, most girls and women are trapped into prostitution by deception and others are forced to choose between their dignity and the family’s survival.

Most of the ministry in Mumbai will be a response to human trafficking; as a result, this trip is for women only. Possible opportunities include:

  • serving at a day center for boys and girls where they receive informal education, nutrition support; you’d probably tutor/teach, play games, and run a children’s Bible program
  • visiting women (when they’re at home) who work in the red light district
  • possibly reaching out to women working in the red light district
  • teaching survivors of trafficking practical life skills and Bible lessons
  • serving at a home for girls at risk of trafficking by painting and/or other construction work.
