An adventure awaits you in Brazil!
Thousands of bright umbrellas stretch to the horizon, and powdery warm sand sifts between your toes. But not everything in Rio de Janeiro is sun, sand, and music.
The beloved Christ the Redeemer statue stands high on a hill watching over this wealthy city. But as the world economy struggles, the divide between rich and poor in Rio widens. The growing homeless population in Rio feels forgotten.
The city’s leaders are carefully cultivating its image to be friendly to business and tourists alike. The city recently hosted the 2014 World Cup and prepares for this summer’s big events: the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The government wants the world to experience the fun-loving Rio of our imaginations. Sadly, the marginalized of the city challenge that image. Rather than address the growing problem of homelessness and poverty with compassion and solutions, the social elites try to push the marginalized out.
Brazil needs your help.
Show the impoverished people of Rio that God cherishes them. Remember for yourself as you remind Rio that every person is precious.
Ministry:
While in Brazil, you will partner with a local church, joining them in inner city ministry. This will look like:
- Kids Ministry: You’ll have the opportunity to volunteer at a boys’ home. The children in this community have seen too much; experienced too much. But at heart, they are still kids. Through VBS and sports ministry, you will impact their future and share the love of Jesus through their favorite language: fun.
- Work Projects: There might be an opportunity for light service projects, in the local community.
- Community Outreach: In every conversation, every prayer, every walk to a cafe, or taxi ride, you will be light in an area where darkness wants to rule. As thousands of tourists stream into the city for the Olympics and all eyes turn to Rio, you’ll have a unique opportunity to change the world, simply by how you live your faith – both in ministry time and not.
The largest, most affluent country of South America is being pushed to the forefront of the world as a host to international events, but the cost to the marginalized in Rio is rising. In the face of fast growth and the world’s spotlight, Rio desperately needs to rely on Christ as its foundation.
