STM 2016 Romania

An adventure awaits you in Romania!

The lore of Dracula brings thousands of visitors to historic Romania to visit castles and experience the history and beauty of the region. Across the country, you’ll also take in idyllic vistas with horse-drawn buggies, cone-shaped haystacks, and endless herds of sheep.

Rural Romania reminds us of a bygone era. But as the newest member of the European Union, Romania is quickly rising out of the impoverished state it entered during Soviet times. Economic and political reform provides a foundation for growth and prosperity for a new generation.

Still, this prosperity is out of reach for the millions of people, often referred to as gypsies, who live a nomadic life within the country’s borders.

With the multiple border shifts in recent history, there are several sections of Romanian gypsies who claim allegiance to different origins, feeling separated from a society that rejects their culture and way of life. Without identity documentation, many are not eligible for government services and aid. Without permanent residence, they miss out on employment opportunities. In most cases, they are not even included in economic statistics, and their poverty and need go unnoticed.

They may seem left behind, but are still precious to God. You’ll discover a new place in your heart as you bring them love and encouragement by connecting and building relationships with them and listening to their stories.

Ministry:

While in Romania, you will serve with a strategic ministry partner and long term missionary, using your unique skills, gifts, and heart for ministry. This could look like:

  • Kids Ministry: From VBS to after school programs and everywhere in between, you can share the love of Jesus through kids’ favorite language: fun.
  • Women’s Ministry: You’ll have the opportunity to share testimonies, sing, and pour into women in a local women’s Bible study.
  • Church Ministry: Encourage a local church through a sermon, worship, or sharing testimonies.
  • Community Outreach: Through house visits and even giving food to low income families, you can give hope to those who need to hear it in the most important place in their lives: the home.
  • Bible Distribution: You might even get to pass out copies of God’s Word to those who have never read it.
  • Teaching English: You’ll make relationships with your students and teach them a valuable skill (a second language) at the same time!

Will you reach back into history to draw people into relationships and God’s kingdom?
