STM 2017 Chicago

An adventure awaits you in Chicago!

Just beyond the glamour of the Magnificent Mile, hearts lie in ruin.

Millions of guests visit the Windy City each year to experience the shopping, restaurants, and world famous landmarks. The famous elevated trains rumble above bustling streets that still retain the welcoming feel of a Midwestern community. Chicago’s warm, friendly atmosphere makes it a popular destination for tourists and businesses alike.

The most diverse region in the Midwest, Chicago boasts over 200 ethnic and language groups. From the famous deep-dish pizza and Ukrainian borsch to dim sum in Chinatown, it’s all authentic.

However, Chicago also remains one of the most segregated cities in the US. Racial tensions run high, and the 165,000 homeless have overwhelmed the city’s resources. AIDS, prostitution, gang violence, and drug abuse feed a perpetual cycle of decay that haunts the city.

Chicago needs to experience the power of God to break the stronghold of poverty and hopelessness.

Ministry:

You will partner with local churches in southern Chicago to share the hope and love of Jesus in a real and relevant way through:

  • Kids Ministry: Through VBS, sports ministry, arts and crafts, and just hanging out in local parks, you will build relationships with children in your neighborhood, teaching them the truth of God’s love through their favorite language: fun.
  • Homeless Ministry: You could volunteer at a local shelter that provides need-based evangelism, giving out everything from kitchen supplies to clothing to those who desperately need it. Through helping with laundry, serving meals, and other chores around the property, you’ll touch each person who comes through the doors.
  • Work Projects: There is also an opportunity for restoration projects within the city, working alongside community works programs. This could look like park clean up, maintenance at retirement homes, etc.
  • Community Outreach – from giving free snow cones in parks to starting conversations while riding the L, every moment, whether scheduled or an “off day”, will be an opportunity for sharing the love of Christ.
  • Urban Plunge: In your free time, take in one of Chicago’s many museums, ride the giant Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, or grab a Chicago-style hot dog from one of the carts that dot downtown.

This trip is for people who:

  • Love playing with kids
  • Enjoy serving alongside established ministries in reaching their communities
  • Have a heart for the poor and disadvantaged
  • Want to grow in their faith while sharing God’s love with others

Will you share the hope of Christ with the people of Chicago?
