As the Thai economy strengthens and the natural beauty draws visitors, tourism of a different sort also flourishes. Human trafficking and sexual tourism continue to grow.
Buddhism teaches that a person’s future is predetermined by karma. Because males can go to the temple, become monks, and earn merit in their faith, women are the breadwinners of the family—in addition to raising the children, cooking, and cleaning. If a family enters into debt, it’s the responsibility of the daughters to pay off the debt. So they are sent to the nation’s capital or other tourist areas to work. And while some families believe their daughters are really just going to be waitresses, others know what work awaits them.
The women and children of Thailand need to be freed from the bondage of poverty and sexual exploitation.
Ministry:
While in Chiang Mai, Thailand, ministry opportunities include:
- Living Missionally: A primarily Buddhist country, every person you meet is likely someone who does not know Christ. Whether in a local restaurant, massage parlor, or shopping at the market, every interaction is an opportunity to share the love of Christ with someone who does not know Him.
- Monk Ministry: You might have an opportunity to share the Gospel with Buddhist monks.
- Learn and Encourage: You will meet a ministry that works with women who have come out the bars and are seeking restoration. You will learn firsthand the reality of trafficking in Thailand, spend time with these women, and encourage those who have dedicated their lives to fighting modern day slavery.
- Bar Ministry: In the evenings you will have the opportunity to sit in a bar and talk with a woman on her break, learning her story and sharing God’s love with her.
- Kids Ministry: You might have the opportunity to share God’s love with children in the local slums, through possible VBS or a child’s favorite language: play.
When you join us in Thailand, you can share love and hope for the future to women trapped in prostitution. Share a promise of forgiveness that they have never imagined.
Human trafficking is one of the largest modern day justice issues in the world. The women of Thailand need to know the truth of their worth and freedom in Christ.
