How You Will Minister in Jamaica
Ministry Overview
What Is Needed:
There is a remarkable difference between Jamaica's image as a carefree, tropical paradise and reality. The island’s beaches and vacation spots are beautiful and inviting, but money from tourism doesn’t reach far into the interior, unfortunately.
Sadly, many areas remain where people are lacking basic necessities, such as running water and electricity. These are the areas in which you are needed the most, the areas to which God may be calling you.
What You Will Do:
We will be working in Kingston and partnering with the Salvation Army. There is an orphanage, nursing home and school for the blind on-site. Feeding programs, prayer walks and street evangelism are all possible ministries you could be doing.
How to Pray:
-Pray in preparation for the children at the orphanage, that God would soften their hearts to the fact that they have a heavenly Father.
-Practice hearing the Lord’s voice through prayer walks, as this will be a part of your ministry while in-country.
-Pray for the work that the Salvation Army is doing in Jamaica, asking God to strengthen the full-time missionaries there.
About This Location:
Jamaica is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles of the West Indies, situated south of Cuba. Its total area is slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut. Kingston, the capital and largest city, is also a large commercial seaport.
Jamaica’s terrain is mountainous, except for several lowlands in the southern coastal area. Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point on the island, rises 7,402 feet from the floor of the Blue Mountain Range in the east. The 635-mile irregular coastline creates excellent natural harbors, including Kingston, Saint Ann’s Bay, Montego Bay, and Port Maria.
Food and lodging
Food and lodging are rustic. Bring your sleeping bags, and be prepared to sleep on the floor. Food will be provided by the local ministry.
Safety issues
Safety is a concern in Kingston, as violence and theft can occur in this area. Always go out in groups, and avoid secluded areas when traveling. No one should walk alone, and never leave valuables unattended. Women’s purses should be zipped and held closely to the body, while men should carry their wallets in their front pockets.
Religion
The Jamaican constitution advocates for freedom of religion for all people, and the government generally respects this. Over half the population claims to be Christian; another 20% claim no religious belief at all, and the rest make up the “other” category, including a large group of Rastafarians.
History
Jamaica was first settled by the Spanish in the 16th century, when they brought the first African slaves to the island. 100 years later, the British gained possession of Jamaica, using its natural commodity of sugar as a valuable export. The island was a British colony for a long period of time, but eventually gained its independence in 1962.
