WR Reunion Trip for I squad
The Dominican Republic is soaked in history. One of the first landing points for Christopher Columbus during his 1492 encounter with the Americas, it later became the site of the first European colony. Europe’s influence on the island can still be seen in Santo Domingo, the oldest colonial city in the Western Hemisphere.
These Spanish-speaking Caribbeans’ favorite pastime is baseball, and the kids will play it all day long! They fully embrace the “island life” and the people are extremely friendly and laid back.
Although known for its vast sugar plantations, the economy of the DR now depends on tourism and the service industry. Political corruption remains a lasting issue, as does the ever-expanding gap between the wealth of the rich and the poverty of the poor.
The Dominican people descend from a mixture of Spanish colonists, African slaves, and the Taino native people. While many Dominicans claim Christianity as their faith, estimates suggest that 70% of people are Christians in name only. Indigenous religious customs steeped in witchcraft still thrive in the villages of the DR. Most Dominicans need to encounter Jesus in a fresh way.
I squad is invited to reunite and bring new life to the Dominican Republic.
Ministry:
Your ministry partner is a pastor in North Santo Domingo, who gave up his job as a computer repairman to pastor a local church. Pastor Juan has a huge heart for his community – and big dreams. You will serve alongside him in:
- Kids Ministry: VBS for local children as well as baseball camps.
- Church Ministry: Participate in evening church services and church plants by preaching sermons, giving testimonies, and sharing songs.
- Work projects: Cleaning, picking up trash, and construction around the church property.
Come enjoy an adventure amidst the beauty of the DR’s mountains, forests, and sandy beaches as you deepen your faith and share it with others.
