From the 200 foot cliffs of Cabo Rojo to the ancient streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico is known to be a wonderful tourist destination and to have a relaxed Caribbean culture. However, life on this island is not what you see in the travel magazines. Nearly half of the population in this beautiful country lives below the poverty line and struggle to find jobs. In 2017 Hurricane Maria devastated the nation – the power grid for the entire island was destroyed, leaving 3.4 million U.S. citizens in the dark. About 6% of the population fled Puerto Rico as a result of Maria, that’s over 200,00 people. This tragedy left Puerto Ricans frightened, confused, and hopeless. As they continue to recover, will you share the hope of Jesus in Puerto Rico?
God is calling you to journey with Him, to share His love with the nations and establish His Kingdom on earth. Will you join Him in Puerto Rico?
Along with the devastation left by the hurricanes, the conflict within Puerto Rico’s political identity has divided the nation. Independence, US statehood, or the current arrangement of the Commonwealth are all options, but most people seem content with the status quo. The biggest problem may be, however, the high levels of corruption that plague local government. Pray for wise governance and decisions geared toward the best interests of the islands’ inhabitants.
