On March 11, 2011 a massive earthquake hit the coast of Japan, devastating the Island nation. It ripped through northeast Kyushu, spawning a series of frighteningly powerful tsunamis that dealt even more devastation.
The epicenter of the quake, which was recorded at a record 8.9 and later revised to 9.0, was the largest ever in Japan and the fifth most powerful in the world, costing over 18,000 lives.
