An adventure awaits you in Brazil!
Thousands of bright umbrellas stretch to the horizon, and powdery warm sand sifts between your toes. But not everything in Rio de Janeiro is sun, sand, and music.
The beloved Christ the Redeemer statue stands high on a hill watching over this wealthy city. But as the world economy struggles, the divide between rich and poor in Rio widens. The growing homeless population in Rio feels forgotten.
The city’s leaders are carefully cultivating its image to be friendly to business and tourists alike. The city has completed its hosting of the 2014 World Cup and is now in deep preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The government wants the world to experience the fun-loving Rio of our imaginations. Sadly, the marginalized of the city challenge that image. Rather than address the growing problem of homelessness and poverty with compassion and solutions, the social elites try to push the marginalized out.
Brazil needs your help.
Show the impoverished people of Rio that God cherishes them. Remember for yourself as you remind Rio that every person is precious.
As Rio prepares to welcome the world, a strong foundation of prayer could not be more important. Spend time prayer walking around the historic city, asking God to touch the people who will soon fill them. Intercede for the nations that will gather in Brazil. Meet visitors from around the world, hear their stories, and share God’s story of redemption with them.
Reach out to the poorer communities of Rio. Love the forgotten children by partnering with local churches that have thriving children’s ministries.
True to the Brazilian spirit, you could also get outdoors and enjoy a taste of what Brazil has to offer. Kayaking, rafting, trekking, snorkeling, and surfing await you. Play a pick-up game of soccer with local kids. Or just relax on the white beaches. Your options abound in beautiful Brazil.
The largest, most affluent country of South America is being pushed to the forefront of the world as a host to international events, but the cost to the marginalized in Rio is rising. In the face of fast growth and the world’s spotlight, Rio desperately needs to rely on Christ as its foundation.
Will you bring compassion and love back to Rio?
