You don’t have to have a passport to serve people who are fleeing persecution in their homeland.
The fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States, Dallas is home to Fortune 500 companies and billionaires. But this affluence has also attracted a large immigrant community that struggles to adapt and discover the American Dream.
Nearly twenty percent of the population lives below the poverty line. After living for years in temporary camps, over ten thousand Burmese refugees struggle to understand and adjust to the American way of life. Iraqi and Asian immigrants bring an even greater variety of religious and cultural influences to the city.
The refugees in Dallas need your help.
With the high concentration of refugees here, children’s ministry programs need you. On an average day, you’ll have a chance to work with more than four hundred kids!
Your team will minister to the children, many of whom were born in refugee camps. Teach them to play soccer and other team sports, do crafts with them at Vacation Bible School, or simply play with them in the park. These kids are desperate for attention and love. Feel your heart grow as these kids run into your arms.
You can minister to the adult immigrant community, teaching English and leading them to discover hope for the future. Living in camps for most of their lives, many also need to learn basic home maintenance and life skills. Help them bridge that gap and learn how to build a brighter future for their families.
While you’re in Dallas, you should take advantage of the opportunity to visit the local sights. History buffs will enjoy visiting the grassy knoll and the JFK museum. Thrill-seekers will enjoy a day at the original Six Flags amusement park.
Over a million people call Dallas home, and the city boasts an ethnically diverse population that fosters a culture of cooperation, but the local refugees’ needs are greater than Dallas can meet on its own.
Will you leave the comfort of your home to help the refugees adapt to their new home in Dallas?
