Dominican Republic STM 2023

The Dominican Republic (DR) shares the island Hispaniola with the country of Haiti. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Nearly 80% of the country’s 49,000 sq. km. is covered with mountains, but some 20 different topographical areas exist in the country.

The DR is the second largest country in the Caribbean with around 11 million people. As it may look from the outside that the DR is a thriving tourist destination bringing in around a billion dollars annually. The reality is that over 40% of the country is living in poverty, earning less than $1.50 a day and causing much heartache and suffering.

Adventures will be flying into the Cibao International Airport which is located in Santiago in the North part of the island. We will take a 20 minute bus ride and end up in the town Moca, where we will partner with the local pastors as they plant churches and share Jesus with the Dominicans and Haitians that are in their communities.

Ministry Opportunities

  • Children’s Ministry – Work alongside the local church, giving the children an opportunity to participate in a Vacation Bible School.

  • Church Planting – Work with local Pastors in their church planting efforts, in areas of evangelism and prayer walking.

  • Food Distribution – Provide physical food and spiritual food to local communities, sharing with them the hope that is in Jesus as you do.

  • Public Schools – Share the gospel with students in the local schools through skits, puppets, testimonies, music, and etc.

  • Sports Ministry – Work with the local church and local sports organizations in the area of sports clinics, that will give teams the opportunity to share Jesus with the participants.

  • Prison Ministry – Take food to the prisoners (Dominican jails don’t provide food for the prisoners) and share the gospel with them through preaching, testimonies, gospel literature, and delivering Bibles.

Lodging

We will be staying at Hotel Baramar in the city of Moca, which has refreshing air conditioning, private bathrooms with showers, and internet service to communicate with family and friends back home.

Food

As you dig deep into Dominican culture you will have the opportunity to eat food prepared by Dominicans from the churches we partner with. Fresh fruit like mango, pineapple, passion fruit and dragon fruit are as prevalent as they are fresh and delicious. A country favorite is red beans and rice with chicken and tostones.

Transportation

You will fly into the Cibao International Airport which is located in Santiago in the North part of the island. Your Project Leader will meet you at the Cibao airport and take you on a 20 minute bus ride to the town of Moca. All daily local transportation, as well as to and from the airport, will be provided.

Health & Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.
