Beyond the fairways and tennis courts of Hilton Head Island, the legacy of slavery lingers in the Deep South.
Considered one of the top ten family-friendly beaches in the world, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina hosts more than two million tourists a year from around the world. Hilton Head offers world-class tennis and golf, cultural events, and it boasts many gated communities filled with prominent and wealthy residents.
But just on the other side of the island, you will find dilapidated trailer homes of families struggling to make ends meet. Isolated from the privilege of the coast, the Gullahs, descended from freed slaves, on the western side of Hilton Head Island experience a different life.
Despite their challenging circumstances, these members of the Gullah community remain grateful and joyful.
You can impact both rich and poor in Hilton Head.
During your stay, your team will focus on relational evangelism to this diverse community of locals and tourists. You may partner with Deep Well for construction projects to help build homes in the friendly Gullah community.
You might walk Hilton Head’s beautiful foot-shaped shore to share God’s love, talking and praying with those you encounter. You’ll connect with tourist families, striking up impromptu games of Frisbee or beach volleyball, and weaving in your own stories of Jesus.
You could also visit with the elderly of the island, finding your own encouragement as you bring joy and happiness to their lonely days.
At Hilton Head Island, you can speak to the nations about the Kingdom of God, transform the vacation of the average tourist, connect with the Gullah population, and experience God’s love in a whole new way, without ever leaving the beach!
Will you step out of your comfort zone to connect with such an incredible array of God’s family?
