On March 11, 2011 a massive earthquake hit the coast of Japan, devastating the Island nation. It ripped through northeast Kyushu, spawning a series of frighteningly powerful tsunamis that dealt even more devastation.
The epicenter of the quake, which was recorded at a record 8.9 and later revised to 9.0, was the largest ever in Japan and the fifth most powerful in the world, costing over 18,000 lives.
Immediately following the disaster our ministry partner in Japan worked to distribute essential supplies including: water, food, diapers, baby food, feminine hygiene products, underwear, blankets and pillows. In the following two months, more than three hundred volunteers have put more than 14,000 hours of work into bringing relief and hope to Tohoku. Those efforts included initial assessments to determine needs of victims and the distribution of more than 135 tons of physical supplies.
Moving forward, five based camps have been established that will continue work as relief efforts evolve from the immediate aftermath to focus on rebuilding efforts and emotional care for survivors. These programs include new life and home starter kits, trauma-coping tools like journals and counseling for survivors including programs designed to assist children in dealing with emotional trauma.
Adventures in Missions has partnered with this ministry to send much needed volunteers to help clear away this devastation, restore hope and shine the light of Christ in this nation.
