Most people have never heard of Joplin, Missouri. However on Sunday, May 22 of 2011, a catastrophic, multiple vortex tornado struck this city, making national news. This meant that 3 funnels all came together, reaching a maximum width of more than 1 mile during the peak of its path! Destruction was all that remained in Joplin. The National Weather Service reports that more than 75% of this city was completely demolished with over 7,000 buildings destroyed including many homes, hospitals, and churches.
Many months later, the city is looking very different. Due to insurance, most businesses have been able to quickly rebuild but many families are still homeless. According to a city ordinance, the personal property must be clear enough to run a lawn mower through it with no problems. Most people do not have the help, money or time to finish this intense clean up and rebuilding stage, leaving lots vacant and families homeless.
Your ministry will be highly relational, coupled with intense manual labor. This community is ready to be restored and rebuilt with the help and support of YOU. Clearing debris, rubble and more from farms and home lots might seem tedious, however it is helping the community of Joplin come back home. We are helping restore their normal, but most importantly, bringing hope and love to a place that feels forgotten.
