STM 2016 Appalachia

Despite vast natural resources and  beauty beyond measure, Appalachia remains trapped in despair. The people here need hope.

Unemployment tracks higher than the national average, and many people in this area work in low-paying jobs below their skill level. Outsourcing and mechanization have left many residents jobless, poverty-stricken, and lacking in educational resources.

The people of the Appalachian mountains are strong and come from a legacy of hard work, but years of discouragement have taken their toll. Many people work multiple jobs, collect government aid, and sacrifice just to make ends meet.

The people of Appalachia need help restoring their promise of a better future.

Ministry:

Teams to Appalachia will serve in one of two locations.

In Duffield, Virginia:

  • Building Relationships: You will partner with a local church which meets at an old church camp. Your primary ministry will be to the elderly, joining in games and crafts, singing songs, telling stories, and building relationships with those who feel forgotten.
  • Home Restoration: You will also partner with a non-profit ministry that helps with basic home repairs and cleaning to the elderly or homebound individuals. Most of all, you’ll build relationships with those isolated from society, reminding them that they are seen and loved by God.
  • Community Improvement: Your team will also clean up around the camp where your church meets, moving brush piles, doing small construction projects, and cleaning the buildings.

In Kingsport, Tennessee:

  • Community Improvement: You will also do manual labor and maintenance projects on your host church’s property, and also occasionally at a community member’s home.
  • Children’s Ministry: In addition, you will have the opportunity to do two VBS programs.
  • Feeding the Hungry: Participants over the age of 14 can also help in a children’s feeding program, preparing and preparing and distributing food for underprivileged children.

Wherever you go, whatever you are doing, you will live your faith in area of our country that desperately needs the hope of Christ.

Surrounded by the beauty of creation, time in the Appalachian Mountains will offer you and your team the opportunity to reconnect with God and deepen your faith.

Hungry for both hope and help, the people of Appalachia need to hear the good news of the Gospel and see the compassion of Jesus brought to life.

Will you be the one to share the love of Jesus and help the people of this region find peace?________________________________________________________________
