Belize is a popular tourist destination in the Caribbean, thanks to ancient Mayan ruins, the largest cave system in Central America, and one of the largest barrier reefs in all of the world – including the iconic Great Blue Hole, one of the world’s top 10 dive sites.
But beyond the resorts and tourist attractions, is the heart of Belize: its people.
Descended from the ancient Mayans, European immigrants, and African slaves, the people of Belize have a culture all their own. Almost half of the population are Roman Catholic, while 32% claim Protestant Christianity. It’s the only country in Central America whose primary language is English. Students attend government funded schools, but the nation has the lowest literacy rate in the Western Hemisphere.
Like its neighbors throughout Central America, Belize needs hope.
Ministry:
While in Belize, you will partner with a host ministry deeply involved in its community. While several popular ministry options are listed below, make sure to let us know if you have a skill you’d like to use on this trip. Our host loves to use team members’ unique abilities and talents to share the Gospel. This could include:
- Kids Ministry: Whether VBS or sports programs, you can share the hope and love of Christ through kids’ favorite language: fun.
- Teaching English: Maybe you feel moved to teach English. Whether it’s to adults or children, you’ll be doing more than teaching them a marketable skill – you’ll be sharing your faith through relationship, and possibly even teaching someone to read the word of God.
- Work Projects: Whether it’s light construction, a restoration project in a hurricane-damaged community, or helping a homebound senior with needed home repairs, your skills will bless someone who needs it.
- Community Outreach: As you serve in this beautiful country, take a taxi, or even explore on your off day, you’ll have opportunities to share your faith with every local and tourist you meet, living missionally through adventure.
