An adventure awaits you in Ethiopia!
Located in the horn of Africa, both Middle Eastern and tribal African influences touch every corner of Ethiopia. The most populated landlocked country in the world and the second most populated nation in Africa, Ethiopia is one of the oldest cultures on earth. Literature and archaeological finds date back to Bible times – including the servant from Ethiopia mentioned in the book of Acts. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church even claims to being the modern day home of the Ark of the Covenant.
And, of course, Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee.
The country itself is as beautiful and diverse as its people, with tropical jungle in the west, mountains, desert in the east, and even the largest cave on the continent of Africa. It’s also a nation well acquainted with pain, as during the last century civil wars and famine devastated the land.
In the heart of Ethiopia is a town called Debre Zeyit, known for the beautiful flowers sold along its streets. Surrounded by rolling hills and close to Green Crater Lake, this town also has another distinction – almost 200,000 residents touched by the prevalence of HIV, tuberculosis, and their resulting loss of life. Most children have lost at least one parent; many have lost both.
Ministry:
While in Ethiopia, you will partner with a local ministry and will do:
- Kids Ministry: You will serve with a child development center. School will be out of session, but you will be able to do VBS and sports camps, sharing the love of Christ through kids’ favorite language: fun.
- Community Outreach: You can visit the homes of these children, meet their families, and encourage their parents.
- Work Project: There might be an opportunity to do light construction or a project like painting where needed.
Whether you’re running a VBS or visiting a home, you will build relationships with everyone you meet, sharing the timeless truth of God’s unconditional love.
