STM 2017 Nashville

An adventure awaits you in Nashville!

Faith is an important part of Nashville’s heritage and character. From small neighborhood chapels to mega-churches, synagogues, and mosques, religion is woven into the fabric of the city’s culture.

In a city with a high number of Christian music labels and publishing houses, it sometimes feels like faith is for sale.

Nashville needs more love and passion, less religion and sales pitches.

Nashville also has a high homeless population. Of the 600,000 residents, more than twenty percent live below poverty level. In addition, refugees from around the world have found safety in Nashville, but they face challenges adapting to the United States. Many come from temporary camps and have no skills or trade to produce an income.

Your team will serve in East Nashville. The area is experiencing high levels of gentrification (displacement of lower income families) due to a recent population boom. The poor who once resided here are being forced to another area because the influx of new residences has driven up the housing prices. East Nashville has become the up-in-coming, hipster area of town, and there is a lot of tension between the new and old residents.

Ministry:

You will partner with a ministry in northern Nashville, focused on breaking the cycle of poverty through prioritizing children’s ministry and skills development. This includes:

  • Kids Ministry: You will teach VBS and participate in summer educational enrichment activities to bridge the gap from one school year to the next.
  • Community Outreach: You will volunteer with resource centers providing food and clothing resources to low income communities.

In your free time, you may visit the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, or take some time to explore the beautiful countryside on the outskirts of the city.

Will you join those God is using in Nashville to transform the culture of religion to one of heartfelt faith?
