STM 2019 – Appalachia

From locations.adventures.org

Adventures in Missions has taken more than 115,000 people on mission trips around the world. Through various short and long-term programs, Adventures helps people from all walks of life discover the world, who Jesus is, and what He has called them to: making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28) and being His witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1).

You want to do something that matters. You want to feel empowered and to make an impact on the world around you. You read about the way the followers of Jesus lived in the first century, and something in you is longing to do more – to live out your faith, hear the voice of God, and display His love to those who need it.

You want to go deeper in your relationship with God. You want to see lives changed.

Imagine experiencing firsthand how to listen to the voice of God, serve others in high-need ministry contexts, and make a real difference in the lives of others.

If you want to join a Christ-centered community committed to doing what the first generation of disciples did, then it’s time for you to join us in…

The Appalachia region is the central and southern areas of the Appalachian Mountains. The communities in this region are in a fight for freedom from poverty. Unemployment tracks higher than the national average, and many people in this area work in low-paying jobs below their skill level. Many residents are jobless, poverty-stricken, and lacking in educational resources. The people of the Appalachian mountains are strong and come from a legacy of hard work, but years of discouragement have taken their toll. Many people work multiple jobs, collect government aid, and sacrifice just to make ends meet.

The people of Appalachia need help to restore their promise of a better future.

Ministry

While in Appalachia, you will have the incredible opportunity to partner with multiple ministries in the local the community. Your time could be spent working with a couple of the following ministries:

PACE

PACE is an adult day center, where the elderly who either live with their children or who live on their own can find community during the day. Teams will spend time building relationship with the people who come to hang out for the day, play games, sing songs, do crafts. This time can be many different things, so you’ll have the chance to get creative!

Brookhaven

At Brookhaven, you’ll also have the chance to serve the elderly community. This is another opportunity for you to get creative and plan a really special time for the residents of Brookhaven – possibly come up with a few songs to sing, play a few games, or plan art projects. Regardless of how you choose to spend your time with the residents, they will feel the love and care of Jesus through your intentional time with them.

Hunger First

Hunger First is a store where the homeless can come to get clothes and food when needed. You and your team will be sorting through donations, handing out groceries, and serving hot food. This is a very relational ministry and you will be able to spend time talking to people coming in throughout the day.

Day Center

Our friends at Hunger First are working on repairs to a building that will be used as a Day Center. The Day Center will provide a place for people experiencing homelessness to go during the day. You will help with small construction projects around the building, this could include: peeling wallpaper off the walls, ripping up carpet and tile, painting etc.

Grace Community Fellowship

Grace Community Fellowship will serve as your host, and you will have an opportunity to serve them by helping around the camp where you will be staying.

Lodging

You’ll stay in a cabin in Duffield, VA with 40 beds, toilets/showers and separate bathrooms for men and women. There will be a full kitchen where you’ll prepare your meals. There’s no electricity in the cabin, but the church has electricity and wifi.

God is calling you to journey with Him, to share His love with the nations and establish His Kingdom on earth. Will you join Him in Appalachia?
