STM 2019 – Purchase Effect – Thailand (Bangkok)

From locations.adventures.org

You want to live a life that matters. You want to feel significant, empowered, and for your life to count for something. You read about the way the followers of Jesus lived in the first century, and you long for that kind of life — where living out your faith means hearing the voice of God and changing people’s lives.

You want to go to the next level with God. You want a changed life.

Adventures in Missions has taken more than 115,000 people on mission trips around the world. Through various short and long-term programs, Adventures In Missions helps people from all walks of life discover the world, who Jesus is, and what Jesus has called them to: making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28) and being his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1).

Imagine experiencing firsthand how to listen to the voice of God, serve others in high-need ministry contexts, and make a real, tangible difference in the lives of others.

If you want to join a Christ-centered community committed to doing what the first generation of disciples did, then it’s time for you to join us in…

Behind Thailand’s beautiful beaches, its people’s smiling faces, and the tropical jungles lies a terrible secret: modern day slavery. In Buddhist culture, women work to support their families so men can earn spiritual merit as monks. Many parents send their daughters to work in cities where the only option is prostitution. As the country’s natural beauty continues to draw visitors, sexual tourism continues to grow. It’s estimated 60% of tourists visit the Red Light Districts—and 90% of Thai men visit local karaoke bars for the same reason.

Ministry

Connie Rock, owner and founder of Purchase Effect, has been leading these trips for years. This will be the first year that we will be including a new way of sharing the gospel. Not only will we be in the red-light districts, but in the markets and malls where the purpose is to build relationships that open the door for long-term partnership with Purchase Effect. Purchase Effect exists to share the gospel thru creation, beauty, relationships and partnerships.

You will live missionally in Bangkok, home of the oldest and largest Red Light District in Southeast Asia, where over 4000 men, women, and teens work in its multiple-storied buildings. Advertised as a night market, tourists come from all over to purchase souvenirs—and are lured into the bars just steps away. Your team will:

  • Live Missionally: A primarily Buddhist country, every person you meet is likely someone who does not know Christ. Whether in a local restaurant, massage parlor, or shopping at the Weekend market, every interaction is an opportunity to share the love of Christ with someone who does not know Him.
  • Learn and Encourage: You will meet ministries on the frontlines of human trafficking in Bangkok, learn firsthand the reality of trafficking in Thailand, and encourage those who have dedicated their lives to fighting modern day slavery.
  • Red Light Ministry: You will walk the streets of Bangkok, spend time in the Red Light District, and tour national monuments interceding for this city and this nation. You might have the opportunity to sit in a bar and talk with a woman on her break, learning her story.

  • Kids Ministry: Over the years our teams have held VBS for the children of market vendors in the Red Light District. Through coloring, sculpting with play-doh, or playing games, you could share the love of Christ with a child steps away from the open doors of a bar.

God is calling you to journey with Him, to share His love with the nations and establish His Kingdom on earth. Will you join Him in Bangkok?

Pray for Bangkok

Structures of sin and vice continue to prosper, despite increasing efforts to combat them. Corruption allows unscrupulous men – in business, politics, the military and police – to enrich themselves while oppressing others. The moral blights of the sex trade, drug networks, crime syndicates and ecological degradation will remain as long as they are profitable and tolerated. Pray for the breaking of these structures of sin by God’s power.
